WiSA Soil Moisture Monitoring Field Day, November 27, 2009.
Brendan Martin - Crop: Lucerne 1570 Restdown Road Bamawn;
Soil Moisture Monitoring equipment has been installed on working farms throughout the GMID. It has been installed across a range of crop types including permanent pasture, annual pasture, winter/summer cropping and lucerne.

The equipment can help irrigators make more informed decisions about the timing of irrigation required for different crops.

This can result in more efficient water use and increased productivity.
The WIsa Field day Host farmer: Brendan Martin - Crop: Lucerne,
The field day featured farm talks and walks covering all aspects of soil moisture monitoring and presentations from:

-
James Horne from WiSA Irrigation;
-

Technology Delivers Results
Improvements in water technology and have enabled WISA Irrigation Management Systems to deliver real water savings to their customers.

The system has been used across a variety of agricultural industries to grow anything from coffee to grapes, potatoes and carrots to melons and sugar cane.
``You name, we've grown it,'' Mr Wright said.
``We have done a lot of research and development work getting our product to work across different soil and plant types. We have created a flexible system to meet any on farm requirement.''
Mr Wright said soil moisture probes and weather stations radio data back to a central computer containing WISA software. Parameters are set to suit individual farms which operate pumps, valves and filters accordingly.
``We have increased water savings and increased crop quality and yields. We give plants the right amount of moisture at the right time.
``Everything operates in real time and we can read and act on it straight away.''
Local winery Jaengenya has installed WISA technology on it's vineyard. owners Chirs O'Connor and Jenny Young reckon the system is the best thing since sliced bread. "Installing the system has given us accurate and total control over our water usage and the system is easy to control.
It has an overseas contract to deliver a water supply to 8.5thkm of roadside plantings, on a coral atoll.
``We will following up with an additional 42thkm, 3 soccer fields and a golf course.The island project is quite considerable and we can maintain the computer program and health of the system from here in Australia.''
``We are also growing rice in the middle east,'' Mr Wright said.
